Russell Wilson isn't done playing college football. The former North Carolina State quarterback has left his minor league baseball team and will play for Wisconsin this fall, the school confirmed.
Wilson, who visited both Wisconsin and Auburn this spring, is eligible this season because he has already graduated from N.C. State.
The decision is a big boost for Wisconsin, which has no experience at quarterback with losing tw0-year starter Scott Tolzien gone after leading the Badgers to the Rose Bowl. Jon Budmayr was named the starter after spring practice after Curt Phillips injured his knee.
Wilson threw for threw 3,563 yards and 28 touchdowns last season as N.C. State finished 9-4.
"Russell will come in and compete for the starting quarterback position," coach Bret Bielema said in a statement. "This is an unusual situation, especially for a program that prides itself on developing players throughout their careers, as we do here at Wisconsin. However, this is a special situation and Russell is the type of player and person that fits very well with our team."
Wilson is eligible this season because he has already graduated from N.C. State.Wilson, a fourth-round pick of the Colorado Rockies, has played this season with the Asheville Tourists. He leaves the team with a .228 batting average, three home runs and 15 RBI in 61 games.
Wilson parted ways with N.C. State early this spring after he did not participate in spring practice because of his decision to play baseball. Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien named Mike Glennon as the team's starter and gave Wilson his unconditional release.
He will have a little more than a month to prepare for Wisconsin opening its fall camp on Aug. 4. The Badgers open against UNLV on Sept. 1.
