The rift between St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Colby Rasmus and the coaching staff could lead to the team parting ways with its potential star prior to Sunday's nonwaiver trading deadline.
The latest shot was fired by manager Tony La Russa, who told a St. Louis television station that Rasmus isn't receptive to the instruction he receives.
"No, he doesn't listen to the Cardinal coaches much now, and that's why he gets in these funks, in my opinion," La Russa told KSDK-TV. "If he would just stay with (basically) what they teach, he would have ... but I actually feel concern for him, because he hears it from so many places, he's got to be confused."
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports La Russa is upset that Rasmus seemingly puts more stock in the hitting advice he receives from his father than the instruction he gets from hitting coaches Mark McGwire and Mike Aldrete.
Rasmus has been linked to several teams in trade rumors, including the Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays. However, in the same interview with KSDK-TV, La Russa echoed recent comments by the club's front office that Rasmus isn't being shopped.
Following a 2010 season in which he hit .276 with 23 homers and 66 RBIs, Rasmus is hitting .246 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs this season.
