When Steve Williams showed up at Congressional for the U.S. Open alongside Adam Scott, it seemed like something was off. Why on Earth would the guy who caddies for Tiger Woods spend a week looping for a guy who just ditched his long-time caddie and would need to find a new one? And why would Tiger approve such a thing, even being on the bench as a result of injuries to his left knee and Achilles?
With a quick call to Mark Steinberg, it all seemed to make sense.
Speaking by phone during U.S. Open week, Steinberg said, ?Steve and Adam are friends, so they have a relationship. Adam had the bag open for the week and Tiger gave Steve the okay to do it.?
There was nothing, though, said about Woods signing off on any work beyond the Open. Nonetheless, the relationship continued to the AT&T National, where Woods could not play either. According to a Golfweek report and comments made to Tim Rosaforte on Golf Central, it appears that second event ? Woods? own ? may have done in Williams with the 14-time major winner.
Two weeks later, Williams again worked for Scott at the AT&T National, only this time he reportedly didn?t ask for Woods? permission. On the Sunday of the AT&T (Scott finished tied for third), Woods reportedly fired Williams in a meeting, using words such as ?disloyal? and ?overcaddieing,? according to a source.
Williams had been in the country for the U.S. Open, perhaps unaware of Woods? decision not to play at Congressional. It would make sense for the Kiwi not to waste a flight to the United States, maybe earn a little coin and help a friend in the process. According to a source, though, the AT&T National ? or any stint beyond the Open ? did not seem expected from Woods? camp.
