Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones will begin a rehabilitation assignment Friday with Class A Rome, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Jones had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn meniscus in his right knee July 9, at which time he was projected to miss 2-3 weeks.
Although Jones is eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday, the newspaper reports that a Monday return is more likely. The Braves return to Turner Field for the start of a seven-game homestand Monday.
"A lot is going to depend on how he feels and how he progresses," general manager Frank Wren told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "To me, he's doing things I didn't expect him to be doing at this point. That's a good sign."
Jones is hitting .259 with eight homers and 46 RBIs in 77 games this season.
