Phils' Manuel pressing to add reliever, hitter

Charlie Manuel made it clear Monday: With less than two weeks before the July 31 trading deadline, he wants an upgrade to his bullpen and his offense.

?We definitely could use a reliever, without a doubt,? Manuel told reporters at Wrigley Field before the Phillies' game against the Chicago Cubs. ?But we also could use a bat.?

Manuel offered his idea "a bat."

?I?m talking about a good one,? he said, according to CSNPhilly.com. ?If we?re going to get somebody, I want somebody good that will help us. I don?t want someone we?ve already got. We could use a good hitter.?

The Phillies reportedly have been pursuing such a hitter for some time. Carlos Beltran, Michael Cuddyer, Josh Willingham, Ryan Ludwick have been among the rumored targets.

Manuel put the percentages of any deal being done at 50-50.

?We?ll see,? Manuel said. ?(General manager) Ruben (Amaro) and the front office do a good job at that. It?s got to be the right deal at the right price.?
