Derek Jeter moved one step closer to 3,000 hits Thursday when he ripped a first-pitch double off Tampa Bay starter Jeff Niemann in the top of the first inning.
The hit gives Jeter 2,998 on his career as he attempts to become the 28th player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 3,000-hit milestone.
Jeter reached third base on a Curtis Granderson groundout, but was stranded to end the inning.
Through the fifth inning, Jeter was 1-for-3. He grounded out to third base to end the second inning. Later in the fifth, Jeter smacked a ball to third base that Rays' third baseman Sean Rodriguez dove to stop, and then fired to first for the out.
The Rays lead 5-0 after five innings.
