Maple Leafs lock Clarke MacArthur into two-year, $6.5 million deal

Just ahead of the NHL's 5 p.m. ET deadline for requesting salary arbitration, restricted free agent Clarke MacArthur reached an agreement on a contract Tuesday with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

MacArthur, 26, accepted a two-year deal worth $6.5 million, according to figures from CapGeek.com. By doing so he surrendered a year of potential unrestricted free agency.

MacArthur cashed in on a breakout season with the Maple Leafs in which he set career highs with 21 goals and 62 points.

The Leafs' good luck came after the Atlanta Thrashers walked away from an arbitration decision in MacArthur's favor last summer. The Thrashers decided they didn't want MacArthur at the awarded price of $2.4 million, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The Leafs stepped in, signed him for $1.1 million and parked him on left wing on what proved to be an effective line with Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski, the Toronto Globe & Mail pointed out.

The Thrashers are now the Winnipeg Jets following a sale earlier this summer.

MacArthur began his career with the Buffalo Sabres -- he was a third-round pick in 2003 -- and didn't meet expectations. The Sabres sent him to the Thrashers in March 2010.
