Seattle 'looking for veteran' to replace Kasey Keller

Legendary goalkeeper Kasey Keller was named to MLS' Best XI team this week, ending his 20-year pro career on a high note. He is the overwhelming favorite to be named MLS goalkeeper of the year next week, too.

Despite still playing on a high level, Keller, 41, maintains he'll stay true to his word and retire from the Seattle Sounders.

No matter whether Keller joins the team's front office, he is sure to cast a long shadow on his replacement.

"It's unfair to that person who comes in to be compared, but it's going to happen," Keller told The Seattle Times. "Though I'm sure there are a whole lot of guys that would love to come here and be a part of this franchise, and rightfully so."

Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer says the club is interested in signing Australian national team keeper Michael Gspurning, 30, to compete with youngsters Terry Boss, Josh Ford or Bryan Meredith.

"I think if you hand Kasey's job to a rookie, or you hand it to a very young goalkeeper, then I think it becomes a big shadow," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "But I think we're looking more for a veteran guy, so I think that'll help in terms of that transition.

"Our objective is not to replace Kasey. You don't want the guy thinking about, 'Oh, I hope I can do this as well as Kasey.' It's just a matter of going out there and being yourself and establishing yourself."
