PHILADELPHIA ? It looks like backup quarterback Vince Young won?t be available to play Sunday against the Rams, which means second-year player Mike Kafka would make his professional debut if Michael Vick were to leave with an injury.
Young strained his hamstring in the preseason finale and missed practice this week, except for taking some snaps under center Friday to measure his progress. Young has been doing some pool exercises and made progress throughout the week but probably needs a miraculous day of recovery Saturday to suit up Sunday at St. Louis.
Kafka lost the preseason battle to Young for the No. 2 job, but both quarterbacks showed good command of the offense. Kafka?s arm is decent, although his throwing motion is awkward. He spent almost every day of the summer throwing passes to wide receiver Jason Avant at a recreational football field and knows the offense.
But without any experience, it?s hard to believe Kafka could replace Vick and give the Eagles any decent chance of winning.
Notes: Rookie middle linebacker Casey Matthews will wear the headset helmet against the Rams?a strong indication that the fourth-round pick will be on the field in nickel situations even though rookie pick Brian Rolle has pushed for time in the sub packages. Strongside linebacker Jamar Chaney is likely to occupy the other nickel ?backer spot.
? Wideout Steve Smith said the team has some packages that involve him and that he?s expecting to play against St. Louis, another strong sign of his faster than expected recovery from microfracture knee surgery.
