Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert underwent shoulder surgery Tuesday morning and is out for the remainder of the season, the school announced Tuesday.
"The injury appeared to occur during the [season-opening] Rice game," Texas trainer Kenny Boyd said. "He had symptoms, but was not affected in practice leading up to BYU. After that, it got progressively worse. We did an MRI on the shoulder last week, and after our medical staff looked at the results, we recommended that he have surgery. He spent some time talking with his family and they agreed that was the route they wanted to go."
Gilbert, a junior, started all 12 games last year and the first two of 2011 before being benched midway through a 17-16 win against BYU on Sept. 10.
Before last week's 49-20 win over UCLA, Gilbert was moved from starter to third team, behind sophomore Case McCoy and freshman David Ash.
"My shoulder was getting progressively worse and when the doctors did an MRI last week, their recommendation was for me to get it fixed," Gilbert said. "That's why I decided to have the surgery now, so I can get it taken care of, start my rehab and be healthy and ready to go for next year."
Gilbert, a native of Austin, Texas, threw for 2,744 yards, 10 touchdowns and 17 interceptions during the Longhorns' 5-7 season in 2010. Through two-plus games in 2011, he had completed 15-of-31 passes for 247 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
"He's a tough kid that fought through some pain to continue to play, but when doctors told him the injury was something that needed to be taken care of, we fully supported him in doing that," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "We also know that Garrett is a very smart kid with a great understanding of our offense, so we're excited that he'll still be around to help (co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin) and our young quarterbacks."
