Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver downplays SEC talk

Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver is playing down speculation that his school could be moving to the SEC.

In an interview with the Daily Press of Newport News, Va., Weaver indicated the Hokies are happy right where they are in the ACC, which they joined in 2004 after being in the Big East.

"We always wanted to be in the ACC," Weaver said. "Now we're there. Why would we want to go somewhere else when we finally have what we want?"

The speculation about Virginia Tech coincides with reports Texas A&M is talking about a move to the SEC. Should A&M join that would leave the SEC with 13 and in need of another to balance out divisions.

But Weaver said joining the richer SEC wasn't necessarily the right move for his school, saying. "I don't think that's what it's all about. It's about the right fit."

And he didn't think Virginia Tech or fellow ACC schools Clemson or Florida State were likely targets of the SEC.

"I don't think that's going to happen," he said. "There's really no new TV money. (The SEC) already has the state of Florida and they already have the state of South Carolina."
