According to ESPN?s Buster Olney, Twins slugger Jim Thome has accepted a trade to the Indians.
Thome?s no-trade clause allowed him final say on the Indians? Thursday waiver claim, and he took only a couple of hours to make up his mind.
Thome will head out to Cleveland shortly and should be in the Tribe starting lineup for Friday night?s series-opener against the Royals.
The 40-year-old can?t play every day, but he tallied 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 238 plate appearances this year for Minnesota and is capable of providing a late-season offensive spark for the Indians, who trail the first-place Tigers by 6 1/2 games. He?ll act as the Tribe?s semi-regular designated hitter down the stretch, filling in for the injured Travis Hafner.
No word yet on what the Twins will get in return. As Gleeman pointed out earlier, Thome is an impending free agent and turns 41 years old later this month, so it?s unlikely the Indians were forced to give up much.
UPDATE, 9:16pm: According to CBS? Scott Miller, the Twins will get a player to be named later.
