Taylor Mays goes to Bengals in deal with 49ers

The Bengals hope a change of scenery can point Taylor Mays? career in the right direction.

After falling out of favor with the 49ers, Mays has been traded to the Bengals according to multiple reports, in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. Mays was a star safety at USC, who had an impressive workout at the NFL scouting combine. Yet, he still tumbled to the second round of last year?s draft, as teams expressed concern about his coverage skills.

Those concerns continued with the 49ers. After starting six games during his rookie season and scoring a touchdown off a blocked punt, Mays eventually lost his job to Reggie Smith. New 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh obviously was not impressed with Mays during training camp, and there have been rumors that Mays was in danger of being cut.

The Bengals hope they can tap into Mays? athletic ability and at least turn him into a reliable backup safety. However, Mays could be another player who was great at the combine, but not so great in the NFL.
