Cubs' Carlos Silva apologizes to Aramis Ramirez for dugout scuffle
Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Silva cleared the air about his scuffle with third baseman Aramis Ramirez during a Wednesday's spring training game.
The Cubs, who have made nine errors in the first three games, made three more during a six-run first inning in Silva's start.
Silva returned to the dugout and made an off-handed remark about the team's defense, which Ramirez took personally. The two had to be separated in the dugout.
Silva claims he didn't know about the team's defensive problems.
"In spring training, it's a little harder because we don't watch every single game," Silva said. "I didn't even know my team had made that many errors either. That was a very hard inning, not only for my team or for my coaches, but for me. I was trying to do something here, and I gave up those two homers, and I came to the dugout, I tried to take it easy, to relax, to let it go.
"The only thing I said was 'we have to start making plays here.' He took it personally. I know it was my mistake. It was my fault because you don't say anything. But he took it personally and that's what happened. We argued in the dugout, and everything stayed there.
Silva may be feeling the heat. He is competing for a spot in the rotation, one that he doesn't think he has too.
"I told myself, I don't feel like that was me who was pitching that day," he said. "I was carrying so much on me. I was thinking, 'I've got to do good, I've got to show them I can pitch.' There was too much going on in my mind. What happened in that game, then my comment (in the dugout) and 'boom,' a big explosion."
Cubs manager Mike Quade said Silva was very professional in his apology.
