Kevin Mawae: 'Eighteen games is not going to happen'
Shortly after the "Decertification"-Litigation-Lockout drama began unfolding Friday, the NFL claimed it had taken its proposal for an 18-game regular season off the table ... at least for the next two years. In a press release Friday night, the league said it would "Commit that any change to an 18-game season will be made only by agreement and that the 2011 and 2012 seasons will be played under the current 16-game format."
Sounds like there was a fairly non-negotiable point according to the players.
"Eighteen games is not going to happen through NFL player negotiations," Kevin Mawae, president of the now-decertified union, said Monday during a conference call. "We can't justify that for the health and safety of our players."
Two extra games would bring increased revenue to the league's $9 billion pie. But players have balked at the idea, saying it contradicts the NFL's renewed emphasis on player safety, especially in regard to head injuries.
Commissioner Roger Goodell has maintained that an "enhanced" 18-game season would address concerns of fans dissatisfied with the substandard level of play in the current four-game preseason format.
