Crosby returns to ice from season-threatening concussion

Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby, who has kept a low profile since the beginning of January while battling a concussion, skated Monday for the first time since Jan. 5?a big first step for a much-anticipated return to the lineup.

Crosby, in full gear, skated for about 15 minutes before the team practiced at Consol Energy Center. The Penguins? website reported that he stickhandled the puck around cones and took a few shots at net.

Crosby last played on Jan. 5 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. In that game, he was checked into the boards by defenseman Victor Hedman, absorbing the second blow to the head in two games. He was driven to the ice by Washington?s David Steckel in the Winter Classic game at Pittsburgh?s Heinz Field?the blow most observers credit with causing the concussion.

Crosby has missed 29 games, but his 32 goals are still tied for sixth among league leaders and his 66 points still rank high on the league scoring chart.
