Flyers GM: Pronger could return Tuesday

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger could be back in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Florida Panthers, GM Paul Holmgren told NHL.com. Pronger has a cast on his injured right hand and missed his second consecutive game Saturday.

Pronger has what the Flyers term as a generic upper-body injury. However, he was wearing a removable cast on Saturday, according to the Camden (N.J.) Courier-Post.

?It?s just to help facilitate the healing and to make him more comfortable," Holmgren told the Courier-Post. "He?s had it a couple days now. So far, the X-rays and MRIs are negative."

Previous reports indicated Pronger's hand was badly bruised.

Pronger was able to practice with the team but was kept out of the lineup against the Atlanta Thrashers. Without him the Flyers surrendered four third period goals and another in overtime to lose 5-4.

"There?s something going on in there that?s inhibiting his strength and that continues to get better each day," Holmgren said. "But if you?re a hockey player and you can?t grip your stick you?re going to have a hard time.?

Pronger's hand has been a problem since Feb. 24, when he blocked a short against the New York Islanders. He missed one game and then played four before being injured again on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers.

Now 36, Pronger remains the Flyers' workhorse defenseman. He averages 22:29 minutes of ice time per game and has 25 points in 50 games. However, he has missed 18 games this season because of injury.
