Hylton starts?and parks?to extend NASCAR longevity record

DARLINGTON, S.C.?James Hylton, 76, extended his own age record in NASCAR racing when he took the green flag in Friday night?s Royal Purple 200 Nationwide Series event at Darlington Raceway.

The oldest driver to race in any of NASCAR?s top three divisions left the track almost as quickly, parking his No. 0 Chevrolet after two laps.

Hylton, who now has competed in NASCAR racing in six different decades, did not have to qualify for Friday night?s race. There were 43 cars entered?matching the size of a full Nationwide field?and Hylton was credited with a 43rd-place finish.

Hylton?s first NASCAR race was the Old Dominion 400 at Manassas, Va., on July 8, 1964. He finished 19th in a field of 20 drivers.

Prior to Friday, Hylton?s last NASCAR race came in 2008, when he finished 19th in the Nationwide Series? Winn-Dixie 250 at Daytona on July 4.
