The Eagles currently don't have a kicker or a punter under contract, but special teams coordinator Bobby April isn't panicking. He feels good about former Nebraska kicker Alex Henery, whom the team drafted in the fourth round last month.
"If he ends up being what we think he ends up being, he'll lead the team in points for 10, 15 years," April told the Philadelphia Daily News. "That's a big weapon, now."
The only kicker picked in the draft, Henery converted 68 of 76 field goal attempts for Nebraska, including 18 of 19 as a senior last season. He concluded his college career with a streak of 116 consecutive extra points.
April, who particularly likes Henery's confidence, told a story about when Henery kicked a school-record, 57-yard, game-winning field goal against Colorado in '08. When Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini asked him if he could make the kick, Henery replied, "Coach, I'll hit it."
Henery likely will replace David Akers, the Eagles' longtime kicker, who declined the team's transition tender before the lockout. Akers, 36, missed two makeable field goal tries in a five-point playoff loss to the Packers last season.
Punter Sav Rocca will be either a restricted free agent or an unrestricted free agent once the labor situation is settled and the free-agency rules are set forth.
