Packers' Nick Collins will know his playing status in six months

Packers safety Nick Collins will know if he has a future in football in six months.

Collins underwent a cervical fusion surgery on Thursday that may give him a chance to resume his career, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

According to his agent, Alan Herman, the latest procedure went well.

?He felt good about everything,? Herman said. ?He felt it went well. The point that was made was that you don?t know until six months down the road. You see how the healing process goes.

?You can?t gauge what will happen, whether there will be any narrowing with the (spinal) canal or remaining tissue. That will be the determining factor as far as his career. It?s all based on the healing process.?

Collins had previously had surgery to repair a herniated disk he suffered during a collision in Green Bay?s Week 2 game against Carolina. Collins was injured on a collision with Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart. When Collins dove to tackle Stewart, Stewart leaped and his upper thigh came down on top of Collins? head.

?The doctor was very clear about it in terms of the surgery,? Herman said. ?Nick totally understands the need to do this. This was the way to go. It?s going to give him a chance. He would like the possibility of playing again.?

Collins has not been placed on injured reserve yet, but the team has already said he will not play again this season.
