UCF trustees discussing realignment issues Friday

UCF?s board of trustees will discuss conference realignment via a teleconference Friday morning, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Citing a school news release, the Sentinel reported that the school has not received an invite to join another league.

However, UCF officials have met with Big East officials twice, the Sentinel reported, and have been discussed as one of the teams that the embattled league is interested in adding.

School spokesman Grant Heston told the Sentinel earlier this week that the trustees would either have to approve changing leagues or give school president John Hitt the go-ahead to do so. Currently, UCF is part of Conference USA, and would not be able to join another league until 2013, per league by-laws. The cost of leaving would be about $7 million, the Sentinel reported.

The Big East is dealing with the losses of Pittsburgh, Syracuse and TCU in recent weeks. West Virginia and Louisville are also being discussed as potential additions for the Big 12, though that conference might end up letting just one in.

Unlike other schools, Central Florida has been very quiet in exploring realignment. And that?s by design, UCF AD Keith Tribble said. The school would rather negotiate behind closed doors.

?If they know anything about the history of Dr. Hitt and what he?s done with our university, he?s always put UCF first and we?re following that same method in terms of how we?re doing our business,? Tribble told UCF Today last month. ?We?re doing our work and we?ll continue to do it in a way that?s fitting of our institution. We?re people of integrity and we do things the right way. So those who think there aren?t things happening or conversations taking place they would be wrong.?
