Indianapolis Colts team report: Tandem likely if Addai can't play

INDIANAPOLIS?RB Joseph Addai (hamstring) was one of six players held out of Wednesday?s practice because of injury, and it?s unlikely he?ll be available for Sunday night?s game at New Orleans.

While he?s out, the team?s running game should be OK with the one-two punch of rookie Delone Carter and 2009 first-round draft pick Donald Brown. They shared the workload in Sunday?s loss at Cincinnati and provided QB Curtis Painter with a reliable ground game.

Carter made his first career start and contributed 45 yards on 14 carries. He?s a powerful inside runner who can move the pile. Twice, the 5-9, 225-pounder burrowed for the necessary yardage on third-and-1.

Brown doesn?t possess Carter?s threat between the tackles, but is adept at bouncing plays outside. Against the Bengals, he adjusted on an off-tackle play, bouncing it outside to the right and outrunning the pursuit for an 18-yard TD.

Addai remains the best option for the offense, but Carter and Brown should be an adequate tandem until he returns.

Notes: OL Ryan Diem is back at his normal position?right tackle?after spending much of the preseason and the first part of the regular season at right guard. Diem started the first two games at right guard before missing three games with an ankle injury. The loss of rookie LT Anthony Castonzo to an ankle injury necessitated a shuffling at the tackle spots, and Diem returned as the right-side starter once he was fully healed. Diem endured an uneven 2010 as did several offensive linemen. But when he?s on his game, he?s a strong 320-pounder who is a factor in the run game.
