Rangers fire hitting coach Thad Bosley amid problems with players

A reported lack of communication has led to the ouster of Texas Rangers hitting coach Thad Bosley.

The Rangers announced Bosley's firing Wednesday. They replaced him with Scott Coolbaugh, the hitting coach at Class AAA Round Rock.

Bosley got the job after Clint Hurdle left to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates, but Bosley held it for less than three months of the regular season and his lack of communication with his hitters is a major reason, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Hurdle and previous hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, who was beloved by many players, were easily accessible and always available to players, but Bosley was much more reserved and quiet, according to reports. Not only that, but players reportedly had run-ins with Bosley.

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba is reported to have had an argument with Bosley during a trip to Philadelphia in May after Torrealba had asked for extra batting practice. According to reports, the request was granted but when Torrealba started hitting with another group, Bosley told him he couldn?t get extra swings, leading to a confrontation later in the clubhouse.

That was one of several disagreements and altercations players, young and old, had with Bosley, according to the Dallas Morning News.

On the black-and-white side of things, the Rangers have not been terrible offensively, just a bit less potent than last season, but some of that drop-off should be understandable considering outfielders Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz have missed significant time this season.

The Rangers entered Wednesday second in the American League with a .264 batting average and fourth with 291 runs scored. Despite a scoring drought in May, the team is fifth with a .262 average with runners in scoring position. It's also third with a .339 wOBA and second with 72 home runs.

Those numbers are slightly off from this point last season when the Rangers were hitting .277, with 314 runs and a .276 average with runners in scoring position. The additions of Adrian Beltre and Mike Napoli figured to be enough for the team to sustain injuries, although Hamilton and Cruz were major losses.

Clearly the numbers show it wasn?t Bosley?s on-field performance that should have cost him his job, so it is far more likely there was a rift between him and the players.
