David Ortiz homered for the second consecutive night against the New York Yankees, but this time he decided against making a show of it.
Ortiz connected on a two-run shot against Yankees starter A.J. Burnett in the first inning Wednesday. Unlike Tuesday night, when Ortiz emphatically flipped his bat in, as he put it, "Papi style," Ortiz laid the bat down before circling the bases.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi objected to Ortiz's act Tuesday, saying he "didn't really care for it." New York pitchers didn?t brush back Ortiz in retaliation, however, and Girardi himself seemed less than outraged by it. He wondered if Ortiz was reacting to the way young Yankees right-hander Hector Noesi was pitching him.
"Of course, when it happens to you, you're going to defend your guy. If it's our guy, I'm going to say there was nothing intentional about it," Girardi told reporters, according to the Red Sox's website.
Girardi added that he has ?never had a problem? with Ortiz. ?This guy has been a clutch player for a long time. My reaction is probably more to protect our young kid. That's what I'm going to do," Girardi said.
