Illinois lands first commitment

Illinois coach Bruce Weber landed his first commitment of the Class of 2013 on Thursday, receiving a verbal commitment from four-star point guard Jalen James of Chicago's Hope Academy.

James (6-4, 175) plays AAU ball with the Illinois Wolves and agreed to join the Illini after Illinois' team camp this week. If he follows through on his commitment, he would follow in the footsteps of former Illinois Wolves guards Demetri McCamey, Sam Maniscalco and Tracy Abrams.

?I called (Illinois assistant) coach Jerrance (Howard) and told him it was a done deal,? James told ESPN. ?He was in the office and started screaming his lungs out.

?I really didn?t have a second or third favorite (at this point). I was waiting for an offer from them. I committed because of the players they?re going to have, coach Weber, coach (Howard), and, most important, my family will be able to come to see me play and not have to travel too far.?
