Kazmir appears to be on short least with Angels

The Los Angeles Angels are losing patience with struggling lefthanded starter Scott Kazmir, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The latest dud was an outing Sunday in which Kazmir lasted only 1 2/3 innings against the Kansas City Royals. In that time, he allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks. He also hit two batters and was called for a balk.

"Kaz is a little more complicated, a little more baffling," manager Mike Scioscia told the newspaper. "Right now, he doesn't have either velocity or command."

Kazmir suffered through a brutal 2010 season, going 9-15 with a 5.94 ERA in 28 starts for the Angels.

The Los Angeles Times notes that the Angels would owe Kazmir $14.5 million if they opted to release him, but the team also must weigh whether it can afford to start him every fifth game.

The clock could be ticking for Kazmir, as the Angels have to clear roster spots for righthander Joel Pineiro (shoulder) and lefthanded reliever Scott Downs (toe), both of whom are close to coming off the disabled list.
