Ole Miss Rebels Coach Houston Nutt, prone to say the extraordinary when faced with microphones and tape recorders, delivered another gem when discussing his quarterback situation this spring.
Nutt on Monday raved about quarterback Randall Mackey, a junior college transfer who reportedly has overcome a speech impediment to take charge of the Rebels? offense.
?That?s the ting of the spring,? Nutt said, according to the (Jackson, Miss.) Clarion-Ledger. ?The biggest single most awesome thing is him in that huddle, saying very clearly the play and then barking out the snap count. Been very, very proud. I never would have dreamed (that) this time last year.?
Nutt often has allowed his emotions to swell, especially during his coaching stops at Arkansas and now Mississippi. But his pride in Mackey seems evident, and it could play a role in him naming this fall?s starting quarterback.
Mackey is a redshirt junior who sat out last season after two years at East Mississippi Community College. He is battling West Virginia transfer Barry Brunetti and returners Zack Stoudt and Nathan Stanley for the task of replacing Jeremiah Masoli as the starter. Brunetti reportedly looks like Mackey?s best competition, but the NCAA still must grant a waiver for him to be eligible to play in 2011.
