Miami officials announced in a press release that Tony Hernandez will serve as interim athletic director.
Hernandez, a deputy athletic director with 13 years of service at the school, takes over for Kirby Hocutt. Hocutt left Miami last week to become athletic director at Texas Tech.
School officials plan to name a new athletic director in time for football season, the release said.
Hernandez will oversee all the preparations for coach Al Golden?s first season in charge of the Hurricanes football program. Hocutt fired coach Randy Shannon in November and hired Golden, who was Temple?s head coach, in December.
The news might be best for men?s basketball coach Frank Haith. Hocutt said earlier this month that Haith would return to coach the Hurricanes for the 2011-12 season. A quick hire might have placed Haith?s job in jeopardy ? unless it wins the ACC tournament, Miami will miss the NCAA tournament for a third straight year. Hernandez, as interim AD, is unlikely to make such a significant change.
