Wilson, Badgers begin to take control

MADISON, Wis.?It was hyped more than any previous home game in Wisconsin history.

They were climbing the walls about it in Nebraska, too.

For months, this introduction of two strikingly similar programs?and their strikingly similar fans?had been anticipated by everyone in the Big Ten and many beyond its boundaries.

Then the game finally came. And the first half?isn?t it awesome when this happens??more than lived up to every word that had been spoken, and every sentence that had been written, about it.

It was a half filled with dazzling plays by both teams.

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez threw for 153 yards, far more production through the air than most expected. He ran for another 45 yards and a touchdown.

And yet he was overshadowed by his counterpart, Wisconsin?s Russell Wilson. Displaying the kind of creativity, escapability and arm strength Badgers fans simply have not seen through the years and decades, the fifth-year senior transfer was 12-of-16 for 233 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Wilson also had a long touchdown run called back on a holding penalty.

The Huskers moved the ball easily for much of the first half, but Martinez was intercepted on consecutive drives, first by Aaron Henry and then by Mike Taylor, late in the second quarter. Both turnovers led to touchdowns for the Badgers.

Nebraska led 7-0 and 14-7, but now the score is 27-14 and the home crowd is 15 minutes from jumping around.

The Huskers get the second-half kickoff and ought not waste it. Or else the rout may well be on.
