The Philadelphia Phillies fell short of the lofty expectations most had for them, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS.
And now they face the potential losses of two of the key contributors to a 102-win regular season.
Both shortstop Jimmy Rollins and closer Ryan Madson are scheduled to become free agents at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, though the Phillies have exclusive negotiating rights with both players until then.
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told The Philadelphia Inquirer that he would like to sign both before they hit the market and that the team has had discussions with both players.
"We want to keep both players because they have great value and are very good players," Amaro told the newspaper. "We wanted to keep Jayson (Werth) last year, too, but we weren't able to compete with what he was offered. That could happen in these situations, too. We put values on players, and there is a stopping point."
Rollins hit .268 with 16 homers, 63 RBIs and 30 stolen bases this season, while Madson went 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA and 32 saves.
Among the team's other key free agents: righthander Roy Oswalt, left fielder Raul Ibanez reliever Brad Lidge.
